Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Day 6 SUCCESS!

Breakfast: YUMMY oatmeal with a grated apple, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. It smelled like autumn in my kitchen!

Lunch: 2 eggs with 3 potato pancakes

Dinner: bratwurst, rice with grave, cornbread.

Feeling good here! Hard to believe I've already been doing this for a week. A couple times, I have been embarrassed by my portion size. Seeing it on one plate really helps. I didn't finish my oatmeal this morning because I served myself too much and knew it. I didn't feel the need to gorge on the oats. I stopped when I was full. Score!

The thing is, my portion sizes used to be only marginally smaller AND I was snacking many times a day. Also I eat more fruit now.

Today is the day before shopping day, so menus always get interesting as we strive to use it all up before our next trip.

Those two pounds lost are going to make this weekend's sweet treat all the sweeter!

Day 14 SUCCESS

I am a huge fan of the structure of this way of eating. I can count on it. I don't have to pack a snack if I'm leaving for the afternoon, and I don't have to tote around a calorie counter if I'm going to be out for dinner. I can eat sensibly at mealtime and move on. I love this.

Breakfast: Ham & Cheese Strata & applesauce

Lunch: noodle soup in broth & an orange

Dinner: cheeseburger & baked fries, cucumber slices, & an apple

:!: :!: Day 21 :!: :!: And I can honestly say that this way of eating has become a habit! I enjoy it very much!

Breakfast -- not so great. Nutrigrain bars. Stuffed down my throat as I headed out the door to volunteer this morning. Need better food for lunch and dinner.

Lunch - good ol' standby peanut butter and jam on whole wheat.

Dinner - Homemade chili! and cornmeal-brown rice muffins.

21 days of success! :D

Congrats on your 21 and I wonder... did the Nutrigrain bars hold you until lunch?

Thanks Texan & Kevin.

Kevin, my tummy was rumbling at 11, so no, they did not. So I ate lunch nearly an hour earlier than usual -- noon instead of 1. So I bet I get hungry before dinnertime too.

day 23

I know that for me, breakfast must be an equal mix of carbs and protein with some fat in order for it to carry me over until lunch. I also know that a varied lunch suits me better than a one or two item lunch. And dinner has to be hot. That is what I've learned about my belly so far this month.

Breakfast: oatmeal and scrambled eggs

Lunch:

Dinner: creamy beef over noodles, green beans, and hot bread, plus maybe an apple

Day 27

Today's AHA! Moment: When I allow my appetite to rule my meals, I may not eat the same number of calories each day, or get my "5 a day" each day, but it all evens out in the end. I find myself getting enough fruit (whereas fruit used to be a rare item on my plate. Too much sugar, you know), veggies, protein, carbs. It all works out in the end. I LOVE LOVE LOVE not obsessing over meals. I love eating what I want. Breakfast for Lunch!!! And my portions have already scaled themelves back. Knowing that I get to treat myself to ____ whenever I want (real foods), I don't have to gorge myself on it when I have ____. And there's something wonderful about daydreaming about that brownie I'll have on Saturday. The foreplay of food is essential, I see now. It makes it all the better when I get to taste it.

Breakfast - 3 scrambled eggs with a sprinkle of cheddar on top, 3 slices of bacon, and an orange

Lunch - kashi cereal and more bacon

Dinner - pasta tossed with butter and parmesan; pepperoni braid; sweet potato

Day 29

Breakfast: 2 buckwheat pancakes with a little syrup and 2 scrambled eggs

Lunch:

Dinner: hot dogs, chips, and a diet pop at a school function. And early. 4:30 dinner! This worries me. I may need a mini meal tonight. On second thought, because I am desperate to get rid of diet head, I am going to relax my standards today. I'm not going to worry about tonight. Whatever will be, will be. I hereby declare today a mildly S Day.
