~emilyr's check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

That almost sounded a little competitive! You know I'm probably the least competetive person, if I scense you getting competetive, I'll quit just so you can pass me. So, let's do this together... come-on Em!!!! You've done your longest streak so far... 12, right? Over half way. I do suggest taking an S day soon though... So you won't crack.

Okay, no competition here    I am still green and it is Friday afternoon. Tomorrow I will eat one of the carefully wrapped Special K bars I've been saving ~ unless the kids eat them tonight    Did I just say unless they eat them, does that mean I could live without having one :?:

Mimi, butterfly and I are all thinking about different versions of Marc's "try for green everyday" plan. I've written it on the May challenge page if you're interested. I know that's kinda what you're doing, and you're on track!

You should write down your current plan if there are mods, so that if you need to look back to see what was working for you, you'll rememer. I'm always trying different stuff, and Reinhard's latest in his trilogy convinced me to wait a month between any mod trials, and to have as few mods as possible.

You're doing great!! 8)

I am following NoS pretty much like the book says, three meals a day, no sweets, snacks or seconds, except on S days and then I am trying to limit myself to two treats a day ~ either a snack, sweet or second, whatever seems the most necessary  I am also going to try and eat a little more at my meals because I was getting very hungry at night ~ makes it hard to sleep :? Also, I am exercising every day, a minimum of three miles. My hope is to lose 7 pounds this month. That would bring me back to the weight I was at before we moved :D :D :D From there I'm going to work on just making this a habit for the rest of my life, make the comittment each morning and if I lose more, great ~ I have lost some obsession :?: :?: :?:

Oh, one more thing, I decided I can take the 8 Sdays whenever I want during the month

Yes Mimi, I do think that is a wonderful part of the nos, for me staying focused seems to be the hardest part ~ remembering to do a little planning in the morning to make sure I can handle the little crisises along the way ~ plan for three meals, and time to exercise especially now that school is out and I am so busy running kids here and there!

And Renee, YES the challenges will begin, but this will make us better no-ser's    Let's stay strong, my kids like to remind me if I am about to mess up, so I will enlist their help to form my good habits on the positive side!

Oh Renee, the dirty rotten scoundrels.....................I will kick mine out of the house if they even get one bit rotten

I will be gone for a little while, but I've got a plan.....Three meals a day, and one small piece of cake tomorrow ~ everything else is off limits! I don't focus on the nutrition part of this diet, YET. So, things are going pretty good. My focus is on the no sweets, seconds or snacks, McDonalds drive through still counts as a meal       I usually only eat a small portion, but I don't worry about it ~ I love that!

I'll check in as soon as I get home with green results :!: :!:

I tried, but the weekend was pretty tough, however I didn't gain and I am back on track feeling like it would be easier to just hole up in the house, so you don't have so much temptation! I think once the habit is very permanent, not just 21 days..........It will be easier to be taken out of the daily norm! I'm a little slow with the habit formation I guess :? :?

But Emily, we have to live our lives, and enjoy them, and that means occasionally going places and/or doing things with other people. I feel the same way at times! It would be easier just to stay home! Don't beat yourself up over your S days...they're supposed to come around in time!

Thinking about forming habits...I often think about how long it took me to form the habit of snacking and overeating sweets...hmmm, maybe I should be more patient with myself in trying to establish my new eating habits!

I am staying green, BUT, the scale isn't moving. I'm setting a new goal ~ 12 pounds by Christmas. That's two pounds a month, maybe I won't be so obsessed with the scale if I back off trying to see huge losses.

I'll take the tortoise approach and in the end, the habit should be firmly in place and hey, 12 pounds is a good amount of weight to lose, right :?:

Thanks for thinking of me Renee and Mimi :D :D

I am really enjoying this no s diet. I feel the habits forming AND I don't continue a binge once I've started, so I feel good about that. :D :D Most days are green :D :D I am so busy during the summer it's hard to find time to check in, but I am trying to stick to the plan every day :!: :!:

My goal is to lose two pounds a month, I really want to become less obsessed with the whole losing weight process and I'm hoping this is a good thing ~ still no movement on the scale

Very funny Renee, but I like it, so I'm sticking to the tortoise plan :D So, vacation went well, 1st Grand Marais trip without my mom :(

I've had company for the whole week after vacation and now I'm refocusing on no s :) :)

I only gained back 1.5 pounds from what I would say was a mild kind of binge over the past two weeks, trying to remember no s during all the busyness. I did not beat myself up, just ready to refocus and start again.

I'm back :!:

I won't post on the July challenge since I'm so late, I'll just use my daily check in. My goal will be the same as last month. Wake up every morning and make a daily commitment to practicing the no s plan and of course exercise each day. I would like to lose 3.5 pounds by the end of July. Life is good :!:

Help :!: :!: I can't seem to get back on track after vacation, I told myself today was the day for a nice perfect green, (actually said that yesterday too, but when I failed I decided to turn it into an s day, which technically it was).

I just had a sweet,   I've decided not to go on an all out binge, so that's progress ~ right???   Nothing more 'til supper which is a barbeque with friends and not until 7 which is 2 hours past my normal schedule, maybe that's what did me in, the mere thought of having to wait longer to eat.......

Get a grip... quick! Plan ahead and go on here every time you're tempted for support and encouragement. I think that you should aim for a goal for the end of the month... say, 13 more greens... or something like that. Tell us all what it is and we'll hold you accountable. If you don't make it, we'll....we'll... we'll give you an assignment of some sort.

Today is Monday, it should be green! July has been a very tough month. Too many fun things, visitors and trips! Not enough time to plan and remember what I'm trying to do

I will be working the program a little harder today, I want the 21 day habit back.... Has anyone figured out how many days of messing up it takes to blow a good habit :?: :?: :?:

I guess technically to break a habit you have to form a new habit so 21 days to ruin a habit as well. But in reality I think a good habit can be ruined much faster, perhaps a week maybe even less. This would be especially so if the good habit wasn't even properly established in the first place.

I know for myself that if I don't exercise for a week, even if I have been doing it consistently for months, it's much harder to motivate myself to start again.

So, I did it :D :D :D I'm back to green. I almost gave into my desire for a rice krispy bar, BUT, I fought the bar and the bar lost :!: :!:

I am going to be green today too! So, Renee I will commit to going green for the rest of the month. And, yes I will join next month ~ this month won't be hard to beat!

I am down 13 pounds since I started no s!! I am starting the September challenge with my focus on being healthy, following the plan ~ three healthy meals and exercising each day with weekends being a time for a splurge of some sort! I love fall :D

Well, its been awhile since I checked in...... I am doing very well. The state fair was good, not over-indulgent. I think I've learned a lot from no s! I can have a treat and not feel like I'm doing something bad and I don't have as much trouble stopping. I know I can have another treat next weekend. My relationship with food and myself is much better!! I've been eating healthier foods for medical reasons and I feel pretty good!! Plus, I'm down 14 pounds and the downward trend is continuing!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

I'm doing very good. I follow the three meals each day from no s, which is a wonderful concept that I truly appreciate, but I think a big thing is the food choices I've decided to adopt, it's pretty limited because of this little problem I've got and I've added some supplements ~ I'm down almost 20 pounds :!: :!: :D :D

That's *absolutely* progress. Stopping mid-snack is much harder than saying "oh well - I'll just try again tomorrow after I devour these 2,000 calories."
~emilyr wrote:Help :!: :!: I can't seem to get back on track after vacation, I told myself today was the day for a nice perfect green, (actually said that yesterday too, but when I failed I decided to turn it into an s day, which technically it was).

I made the rule that I can't come to the computer to sit on my butt until I've exercised. The kids can't until they've put away their laundry, so I figured, it could stick in my head...

I wonder why I just said that, because it hasn't stuck in their heads yet... I guess their rule stuck in my head... hmmm... anyway, it's working so far.

Happy December! A fresh coat of snow has finally put me in the spirit!

I'm struggling a little with the idea of making Christmas treats for my family ~ I really don't want the temptation, but I don't want to deprive them??!! Well,I guess I make them tomorrow and enjoy the S treats, without being too over indulgent.

Off to work out and ponder on that.

We are in the middle of a blizzard; no school or work yesterday and now no school again today ~ this is like a weekend in the middle of the week and I didn't prepare myself. I'm saying green yesterday even though it shoulda been red because of those two little pieces of chocolate, BUT I had a much smaller plate at supper, and so it goes..... Today, I'm a bit more prepared, I'm heading to the treadmill right now~

You go girl! The blizzard threw me for a loop. Cookies! I didn't do it... my youngest daughter did it. It's her fault. 8) I really didn't have too very many, especially when I compare to other Christmas seasons, but I'm a cheater and I need to confess. I plan on making up for it on Sunday, then re-coloring it to remove the red. This is a December-only new rule of mine.

The kids don't have school again today, but I'm prepared! I went to a Christmas party on Sunday and ate foods that are not good for me and felt the effects, now I'm getting to a point where I ask myself "Is it really worth it" and sometimes I can honestly answer with a resounding ~ "NO". I like that! Feeling good has trumped eating a lot of junk

BUT, those peanut buttter kiss cookies were amazing :D

AND, I've changed my running/training and now I'm up to 14 minutes of running during a 30 minute session, I'ma gonna do it!

I should never write stuff like that ~ sets me up for failure. Yup, finished off the peanut butter kiss cookies last night ~ only 4, but technically a fail AND, I had seconds with dinner :( :(

I'm off to the treadmill and I will remember why I shouldn't of eaten those cookies and extra food when my feet are dragging ~ sugar is a downer, I think I read that it is as addicting as cocaine, hmmm... I just don't feel good today ~ maybe its the weather and not the sugar, NO, pretty sure its the sugar :? :?
