five days in Cambridge, MA

Post by flipturn »

Hi, all -- I will be in Cambridge for five days next week visiting my daughter (she is a college student and has a summer job nearby). I haven't spent much time in Cambridge since the Ford administration (okay, that was bad, but I just wanted a clever way of saying that I haven't been there for more than a few hours in many years). Other than the museums and keeping my eyes open to an Urban Ranger with facial hair (yes, Reinhard, that was aimed at you!), does anyone have any good ideas for restaurants and/or fun things to do? Thanks for any tips --

Thank you, blue. I will let you know what I find that makes me think of you. In the meantime, you can't believe how often you inspire my dinner choices. My husband will ask how I thought of combining ingredients in unusual and wonderful ways, and I always give you the credit.

Central Kitchen, in central square is excellent. Somewhat pricey, but not nearly as bad as gastronomically comparable restaurants. The vibe is a little annoyingly hip, but the food is worth it.

For more economical fare, Royal India is great (make sure to order from the Bengali menu).

Wisteria is great, cheap chinese with some really hard core "authentic" menu items like "Pigs blood tofu and intestines" (not bad, actually) but also plenty of tamer, quite delicious stuff.

Get excellent pub food (and drinks) at

The Plough & Stars

and the B-side lounge:

I could recommend a dozen more places... but these are the first that come to mind.

Hey, Reinhard -- Thanks so much for responding; you are extraordinarily kind and generous with your time. I have printed out your list and will let you know next week which restaurants I tried. I have been invited to kayak on the Charles and will have a calorie deficit just waiting to be replenished. (Okay, that last part was wishful thinking, but I probably will be hungry!)
