You know, moderation might be the way to go... thanks for suggesting/volunteering, Soprono!

Shall we try it as an experiment?

I think we'll need a few moderators to make sure there isn't too much delay.

Any one else interested? (I'll put a top level post about this to the main group as well)

Hmmm. It's not immediately clear to me how to enable moderation in this ancient version of phpbb... stay tuned!

You know an upgrade would be really good :)

I've been using a phone recently to access the forum and it is really difficult

Yeah... I think I need to bite the bullet and upgrade. I've tried to a couple of times, and the thing that got me stuck was habitcal login (everything else worked). But I'm not sure how many people are still using the habitcal (have to stare at the logs a bit). I may just have to retire it..

It is a useful tool, if you can make it work. Which software are you thinking of upgrading to?

Reinhard, is there any way of automatically rejecting posts with embedded links? That would get rid of a lot of the latest bunch of spam, and the rest of us can just say google topic, or something similar.

I was thinking about the latest version of phpbb, although it's now so long since I tried that I'm not even sure a direct upgrade is possible. The trick is importing all the old posts, adding url rewrite rules so links to them still work. It's a project, unfortunately.

I might be able to weed out by embedded links, but it would involved messing with the phpbb code, and I should probably just use that effort to upgrade/replace the bulletin board entirely... good idea, though.

Board has been inundated lately.
Would it be possible to add a 'Report' button to make this process quicker for users?

This one, all posts need to go:

https://everydaysystems.com/bb/profile. ... le&u=11219

will post more when I have time.

Sorry, I've been negligent for a while again...

Starting cleanup now... may take a bit to get through it all.

I think I'm going to have to break that habitcal and upgrade the phpbb software . There's just no way I can stay on top of this otherwise.

OK, I think I got everything posted here since my last spambot killing spree.

If you notice anything I missed, or when you notice new spam, please continue to post it here, and feel free to email me directly if it's been more than a few days and things are piling up -- reinhard.engels@gmail.com

I am going to bite the bullet and do this upgrade soon. It will certainly break things in the process, so apologies in advance.

Got him. Thanks, Soprono!

I am planning to do this painful site upgrade before New Year.

I'll try to give some advance notice before I dive in, and I'll keep a backup in case it's a total disaster and I have to revert.

Hi all,

As you probably noticed, I finally upgraded the bulletin board software, and this should make it a lot easier to stay on top of the spam (and even deputize some of you to help me!). Thank you all for your continued vigilance and patience while I figure this out over the next few days.

The good news is new spam has stopped as far as I can see with the upgrade.

The bad news is we've got quite a backlog, and part of the reason new spam has stopped is I have to approve new accounts and I just haven't... probably not a sustainable solution.

I know some of you have offered to be moderators in the past, if you are still interested, please let me know! The new software makes that possible.

Feel free to PM me or email me at reinhard.engels@gmail.com.
