Please consider wrapping it any way that gets the job done, i.e. covering the "business end" of the hammer to prevent/reduce severity of potential injury/property damage. (Shugging done correctly is totally safe to inanimate objects and all living creatures :D ) Be creative. Make it your own.

I slit the ball with a razor blade and wedge the handle in. It stays put. Whenever I am gripping the ball, ( which simply adds a "grip variety" in terms of shape and texture, ) my other hand is on the handle

I cut open a tennis ball, the way folks do to place over the "foot" of a walker, and placed it over the handle end of my SG. For a slight "grip-variety" on certain movements.

I am fortunate to have a 4, 6, 8, 12, & 16 lb Shovelglove. ( The 4 & 6 were purchased in a burst of zeal when I realized how much I enjoy shugging-that's the verb we use, yes? - and wanted my young sons and wife to develop the habit as well.)
