fruit for dessert?
This evening, I made broiled peaches for dessert. They were basted in a little bit of sugar, oil, cinnamon and rosemary. Yum! This got me thinking about having fruit for dessert on N-days. (I took today as an S.) For me, it was a very nice closure to the meal. I cleared the dinner dishes and served ...

help with post-workout headaches
I've lost about 10 lbs so far (in five months), and now I'd like to step things up a bit, so I'm trying to work out more. So I rode the stationary bike in the garage for about 30 minutes. I had my music on and a book to read and felt good I'd done it and felt pretty good while doing it, too. But now ...

Maybe my comment on not being a short-order cook sounded a little harsher than what I actually meant. We get him to have at least a bite of everything, then he can have more of what he really liked, if he's still hungry. But if he is in one of those "I hate everything" moods, I can't cater to that ...

Tonight my husband made a yummy dinner of kielbasa stew and macaroni and cheese. I was cleaning up after dinner (after a lovely, slowly savored plate), and there was a small amount of sauerkraut stew left at the bottom of the pot. I thought, "Well, it's so little. I'll just eat it instead of putting ...

You're ahead of the curve because you've realized that you have a problem and you're already starting to think about how to solve it. Yay for you! I'm not sure exactly what your issues are, but I know that moving is VERY stressful. Can you find non-food treats? Herbal tea has definitely helped me to ...

kids and snacking?
I have a four year old son, and now that I've been no-Sing successfully for five months, I've started wondering about all the snacking that he does. He has a post-nap snack at preschool (I'm not sure what--crackers, probably), and usually some fruit or carrots while his dad and I are getting dinner ...

I'm in school, too, and I struggle with eating while studying, too. I've noticed a couple of things: one is that I use eating as a short hand for a break. What I really need after reading xx pages or whatever is to get up, stretch, take a little walk or make a cup of tea or coffee (and ...

I seem to have a problem with pizza. Usually the 'no seconds' rule is easy, because I feel satisfied at the end of my plate. But somehow with pizza, I don't really feel satisfied, even after several pieces. I would love to make it an S and just not eat it except on weekends, but the rest of the fam ...

Some people have suggested, in the context of treats at work, to wrap up a couple and save them for the weekend. While that's harder at home--you might have to literally hide the cookies to save them--it might be easier to hold out if you know that you're delaying the cookies rather than denying ...

quit smoking...falling down on NoS
I quit smoking. Today is my fourth day without a cigarette. I'm not having bad withdrawal symptoms, except being a bit hyper and feeling snacky. I was trying to limit myself to just a couple of ginger chews to get over the hump, but I completely lost it this afternoon and had a lot of snacks and a ...

Not to introduce unnecessary complication, BUT a lot of people have posted that planning a special "S" treat or two has helped them not go crazy on S days. I've incorporated this from the beginning, and I find that it helps me continue to be more mindful of my food choices on S days. For instance, I ...

Oh, a cook. You must deal with a ton of temptation! I guess the best advice is to start having respect for the rituals of eating. If you have to taste test something, fine, but don't pour a whole bowl or plate of it, unless you're about to eat YOUR meal. Think about how much better things ...

Wow--it sounds like you handled that a lot better than I would have! Good for you for responding rationally. Did your husband back down at all after you explained things to him? I can't really offer any advice, but it's great that you're seeing results in such a short period of time.

Cleaning up after kids
How do other people with children handle the inevitable fact that no matter how little you put on a kid's plate, he or she will leave 1/3 to 1/2 behind? I used to just eat it, but now I'm more aware of when I've had enough, and I don't want to eat beyond that. But it seems sort of wrong to just ...

A small triumph
Last night at midnight, my husband and I were both still up working, and he decided to make a snack. I sat at my desk, reading my article, and I could smell the lovely melted cheese and toasted tortilla in the kitchen.
"Do you want one?" He asked me.
"No thank you," I replied.

Thanks to everyone! I've been trying to identify times when I know I might feel lots of pressure, then have a kind internal dialogue and also have some nuts or a piece of fruit if I'm actually hungry. of stress eating? I'm loving the no-S thing--I feel more in control and aware of my choices. But school starts back up on Monday, and I'm worried that I don't really have a substitute for stress eating, except maybe idly surfing the Internet, which usually just contributes to stress. What do veteran ...

fruit for dessert?
I don't know if this is strictly in the rules, but you might think about doing fruit for dessert. Baked apples and poached pears use only the sweetness of the fruit itself (or a little wine). I find something like this shuts up cravings for the super sweet stuff.

any advice for a grad student?
Hi there,
I've been lurking here for about a year and finally decided to join.
I'm a grad student with a toddler son. Last year, I FINALLY lost all my baby weight. But, we moved this fall and over finals, I had to write four papers (and grade about 100). So, with all that to do, I was staying up ...
